This new course of study, developed in conjunction with several local and regional medical organizations, will prepare you to perform laboratory procedures and work as a laboratory technician in a variety of medical settings.
You’ll start with courses in medical terminology, biology, chemistry, and algebra (among others) to develop a strong knowledge base in the sciences. Soon, you’ll be learning how to perform routine diagnostics, including tests in hematology, bacteriology, urinalysis, immunology, and chemistry.
As you advance in the program, you’ll learn to prepare specimens and use analyzers to generate data on blood, tissues, and fluids by using a variety of methodologies and technologies — all the while developing specific techniques and using instruments that will enable you to recognize factors that directly affect patient procedures and treatment outcomes. Then, in your final semester, you’ll get to put your knowledge to the test and develop real-world experience with a clinical internship in a laboratory or other medical facility.
And the outlook for Medical Lab Technicians is good. According to a May 13, 2009 article in the Wall Street Journal, the American Society for Clinical Pathology says job vacancy rates in some states currently top 50%. Further, the federal government estimates that 138,000 new lab professionals will be needed by 2012 to replace retiring technicians, but only 50,000 will be trained by that time because a third of the training programs at colleges around the country have closed their doors.

In this program at LBI, you'll start by developing basic medical skills like taking blood pressure and using oxygen delivery devices.
